Healthcare Administration is the field relating to leadership, management, and administration work of public health systems, and/or healthcare systems. Health care administrator is considered healthcare professional. Health systems management or health care systems management describes the leadership and general management of healthcare systems. Health systems management ensures that specific results are achievement, that departments within a health facility are running smoothly, it means that the right people and in the right jobs. Healthcare administrators focus on the ins-and-outs that make a healthcare system function. Health administrators have a strong background in both management and healthcare.
Healthcare administrators usually choose to move up the executive ladder. For instance, a manager of a department may become an executive in charge of multiple departments or an entire facility. If a health care administrator doesn’t already have it, a graduate education is sometimes necessary for this kind of advancement. Experienced healthcare administrative professionals are also ideal for taking on consultancy roles, becoming educators, or becoming policy makers in a public service or government capacity. Health administrators are leaders. They head up hospitals, physician group practices, nursing homes and home health agencies. For the healthcare administrator, leadership also means the ability to inspire people to accept the cause of the greater good and make the sacrifices necessary to realize success. It can sometimes be difficult to develop that balance between personal need and the success of the organization, but an administrator finds that balance and gives his people a reason for caring about the facility and its ability to offer the best possible care to its patients. Most health care administrators work full-time business hours, but those responsible for 24-hour facilities should expect to work on an urgent or emergent basis during off hours including weekends, nights or holidays. Healthcare managers, also known as health services managers and health administrators, direct the operation of hospitals, health systems and other types of organizations. They have responsibility for facilities, services, programs, staff, budgets, relations with other organizations and other management functions, depending on the type and size of the organization. They also work in the public sector, for example in health departments, or in the private sector, such as with pharmaceutical companies, health insurance providers, consulting firms or companies that make medical supplies and equipment. Health care administrators have wide-ranging influence within the world of medicine. The leadership that these professionals provide sets the future course not only for the facilities they manage but also for the health care system as a whole. Within this environment, a health care administrator is responsible for establishing health care standards, making strategic policy decisions and implementing the personnel management procedures necessary to support his/her vision. In addition to the internal leadership they provide, health care administrators are leaders within the greater community as well.
Although the professional titles of health care administrators vary according to their place of employment, the significance of the work they accomplish and the interdisciplinary skill sets required doing so and it is universal. Healthcare administrators have the challenge and opportunity to deliver high quality health care within an appealing work environment while contributing positively to the greater community at large.
